Education Graduate Alumnus Wins Presidential Award

Studio Art Graduate Students Present Work During May Exhibition
In May 2011, Courtland Blade; Paul Endres, Jr.; Lisa Gross; Ingrid De Aguiar Sanchez; and Mong-Jane Wu presented their work as part of the MFA Thesis Exhibition. The art of the graduate students—all of whom graduated with master of fine art degrees from GSAS in May 2011—focused on topics ranging from ideas of supermodernity, isolation, and non-places to an inquiry of Americanized Chinese cuisine. Chemistry Graduate Alumnus and Congressman Talks Redistricting, Surviving Forty-Two Years in Politics, and Why He Hasn't Changed Much Since His First Campaign
Chemistry graduate alumnus and U.S. Congressman John Olver, G56, was the subject of an April 21, 2011 Boston Globe article on redistricting. The piece focused on how changes in congressional lines might impact Olver's upcoming reelection. The article also provided a glimpse of Olver's journey from a chemistry professor to an eleven-term member of Congress. Read more.

English Graduate Student's Research Ranges from the Contemporary (the Television Program Fringe) to the Classic (Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend)
Anne Moore, an English graduate student, was the subject of an April 12, 2011 TuftsNow feature article titled, "The Biggest Fan." The piece focused on Moore's research on fan communities and serial narratives in television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Battlestar Galactica and Victorian novels including Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone and Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend. Patricia Allen Honored by the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools
GSAS psychology student Patricia Allen was named the recipient of the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools Outstanding Master's Thesis Award last month. Allen received the award for her thesis on the research she conducted on creatine and its potential to serve as a complementary or alternative treatment for depression. Read more.

Sonia Issac Koshy, G06, G11, has joined ThinkTank Learning as an educational researcher. Koshy, who graduated with her Ph.D. in child development from GSAS in 2011, will be serving two main roles for the Santa Clara, California-based company. Read more.

Art History Graduate Student Wins Best Paper Award at Texas A&M Conference
GSAS art history student Ximena Gomez won the best paper award by a master's student at the 2011 Texas A&M University Graduate History Conference held in February 2011. Gomez won the prize for her presentation titled, "Santiago in Siena: A Transatlantic Approach." Read more.

GSAS Student One of Twelve Graduate Students in the U.S. Chosen to Attend Conference in Germany
Timothy Lawton, a GSAS chemistry doctoral student and member of the Sykes Research Group at Tufts, was one of only twelve graduate students in the country to participate in the 13th annual JFC-Fruhjahrssymposium in Erlangen, Germany. Read more.

Research of psychology graduate makes national news
The research of GSAS psychology graduate alumnus Nicholas Rule, G10, and Nalini Ambady, a psychology professor, has been covered by numerous media outlets including United Press International (UPI), Yahoo News, the ABA Journal, Science Daily. The pair's research found that the law firms are more profitable when they are led by managing partners who have faces that look "powerful." Read more.

Child development student appointed to Massachusetts AIDS advisory panel
GSAS child development doctoral student Miriam Arbeit has been appointed to the Massachusetts AIDS Advisory Panel. In her new role, Arbeit will be responsible for everything from reviewing sexuality education materials that the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education distributes to helping youth leaders draft and present policy proposals. Anne Madden and Sarah Gaither, doctoral students in the departments of biology and psychology, respectively, were two of only 1,600 graduate students in the United States to receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowships for 2010. Read more.
