Studio Art Graduate Student Gets Up Close and Personal with New Project
Artistic expression is, in many respects, about control. The artist—a
painter, photographer, designer, or sculptor—has a vision in his or her head and
this individual, uncompromising perspective is what ends up gracing galleries,
studios, and wherever art can be seen. This willingness to own "the work" and
push boundaries, even in the face of criticism from peers and society, is what
makes art exciting, dangerous, and, ultimately, one of the most unique and human
forms of expression. But what happens when an artist gives up some control? This
is a question that GSAS studio art student Heather La Force is tackling through
a project titled, "Submit Your Face." Read more by clicking

Book by Graduate Alumnus Sheds Light on King Philip's War
Between 1675 and 1676, a
fierce war raged in New England between the English colonies and the Wampanoag
tribe. The tribe was led by Metacom, also referred to as King Philip, and over
the course of "King Philip's War"—a conflict that began in the frontier
settlement of Swansea, and eventually spread to the colonies of Plymouth,
Massachusetts, and Connecticut—hundreds of colonists were killed or captured;
the natives fared much worse—thousands were starved, or captured and either
executed or sold into slavery. In his latest book,
King Philip's War: Colonial Expansion,
Native Resistance, and the End of Indian Sovereignty, urban and
environmental policy graduate alumnus Daniel Mandell, G89, explores this most
bloody of conflicts. Read more by clicking

Graduate Student Helps Bring Archaeological Dig Site Into the Digital Age
Streaming movies,
emailing, tweeting, and, yes, playing "Angry Birds" are just some things we
think of when we hear the words "the iPad." What doesn't come to mind, which is
no surprise, is how Apple's revolutionary product can be used in a field like
archaeology, a discipline which—through its scientific study of past human life
and activities—appears to have little in common with technology, which has
little concern with revisiting its past (see Walkmans, Atari, Palm Pilots),
opting to keep an eye firmly on future advancements. But, as GSAS classical
archaeology student Chris Motz has found, iPads and archaeology
can and should go together. Read more by clicking
