The department offers a Ph.D. in experimental psychology, with specialization in cognition; neuroscience; psychopathology; developmental, or social psychology. Training in counseling and clinical psychology are not offered. Students entering without a Masters degree will earn one en route to the Ph.D. The department does not offer a terminal masters degree.

Areas of faculty research include memory processes, neuropsychology of language processes, neuropsychology of memory and perception, mental models, semantic models of information processing, decision making, infant perception, memory and aging, animal cognition and learning, psychopharmacology, neural and hormonal control of animal social behavior, nutrition and behavior, social psychology of prejudicial attitudes, social neuroscience, psychology and law, neural underpinnings of emotion, cognition and brain function in anxiety disorders, and shame/guilt proneness and narcissism.

All students participate in supervised research and/or teaching each semester. Integral to the program are courses designed to prepare students for research and teaching careers. Accepted applicants typically possess a substantial college background in psychology, including familiarity with fundamental statistical concepts and research design.
