Applicants to the program must designate a concentration-composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, or theory. They will also be encouraged, and sometimes required, to take courses outside their area of focus. The goal of the master's program is to deepen knowledge and skill in one discipline while embracing research methods and intellectual paradigms in related fields.
Western classical, African-American, and world music (Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and Latin America) are areas of strength in the department, and familiarity with diverse musical traditions is emphasized.
The two-year program consists of eight semester courses, a thesis or composition (one course of the eight required), and an oral defense of the thesis or composition. A reading knowledge in one foreign language is required.
Students are encouraged to participate in performance courses such as the symphony orchestra, university chorale, new music ensemble, jazz band, and African percussion.
Graduates are prepared for doctoral study, teaching, or careers in music.
