Students in all the graduate education programs examine current concepts in educational theory, practice, and research. Courses are complemented with fieldwork, an essential part of the programs. Eight programs are offered.
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) prepares students to be licensed to teach in elementary schools and to teach English, history, political science / political philosophy, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, mathematics, general science, Latin and classical humanities, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese in middle and secondary schools. M.A.T. students have the option of interning in innovative urban high school programs.
The M.A./C.A.G.S. (certificate of advanced graduate studies) in school psychology leads to licensure as a school psychologist. It integrates course work with field-based training and emphasizes a scientific problem-solving model.
The M.A. in educational studies encourages students to create a program that meets their own research interests. The M.A. in museum education is offered for students desiring careers as museum coordinators or education directors. Tufts/Shady Hill Cooperative M.A. is an innovative program that prepares students for Massachusetts licensure for teaching grades five to eight after successfully spending a year studying and working as an apprentice in the Shady Hill School in Cambridge.
The M.S. in mathematics, science, technology, and engineering education prepares students to work in schools, research institutions, and in other educational settings.
The Ph.D. in mathematics, science, technology, and engineering education prepares students for careers in teaching and research based upon a deep understanding of mathematics, science, and engineering content, uses of technology in education, learning and development theories, and pedagogy.
